The first edition of the book by Dr.Y.L.Neene was inspired by the ignorance concerning the nature of fungicides and their application in the control of plant disiases,that the author found prevalent at the time. in the sixties intreset in the use of fungicides had appreciably increased.The industry took on a positive role and a wide spectrum of fungicides were manufactured.The present decade however experienced innumerable criticisms of the use of fungicides and pesticides in modern agriculture.The criticisms(both justified and unjustified)and the increasing prices caused a setback to the use of these methods of plant disease and pest control.the most valid criticism of course is the health hazard both to humans and animals.On this there can be no compromise.But at the same time the improtance of these chemiclas cannot be over lokeed although the aim should be to depend on natural plant resistance,the judicious use of pesticides and fungsicides is imperative as a second line of defence.in this book the basic information on variouns fungicides is given in the introduction thereafter the nature and properties of fungicides;information on those proved successful in the contol of crop diseases;and their mode of action forms the main text.This second edition will be as popular and valuable to indian agricultural students and even to teachers and plant pathologis as the first edition was.
